Hearthstone
is made up of people from all walks of life, each of whom brings
something unique and valuable to the community experience. So who
are we? A sampling of short bios for some of our members follows.
Patty
Patty was born in Manhattan and grew up in Florida. She went to
school on the east coast, then came to Colorado in the summer of
'66 and never left. She worked as a book editor for about 20 years,
went back to school for a master's in social work, and currently
works as a case manager for developmentally disabled adults. She
is still glad she made the switch! Patty is very fond of the natural
world. She can often be found admiring clouds or watching lightning;
she has had some especially excellent adventures rafting and hiking
in the Grand Canyon. She is also a dance fan and likes an eclectic
mix of music. She has loved the idea of cohousing ever since seeing
a TV show about it back in the '80s.
Sheana,
Paul, Adam and Kenna
Sheana
and Paul met as Peace Corps Volunteers working in Paraguay in the
late 1980s. There they developed a shared value for cooperative
living in small communities. After spending way too many years in
graduate education, they seized an opportunity to move to Denver,
where Sheana works as a medical sociologist for the AMC Cancer Research
Center and Paul works as a Speech and Language Pathologist at Children's
Hospital. Their greatest joys and commitments are to their children
Adam, born in November 1998, and Kenna, born in August 2001, so,
while they share a passion for the outdoors, and love to hike, ski
(downhill and telemark) and bike, they are always on the lookout
for family-oriented outdoor activities and look forward to sharing
them with cohousing neighbors.
Kathryn
Kathryn has recently become an empty nester. She works in an inner
city pediatric clinic as a physician's assistant. Her avocation
is Central American activism. She strives to keep active, gardening
and biking to counteract all the calories from exquisite chocolate.
Aaron
Aaron is a retired professor. His interests include music (classical,
opera, jazz), ballet, literature, history, politics and cohousing
-- a great idea for our segmented society.
Harriet
Harriet came to Hearthstone by way of Madison, WI, Missoula, Boulder,
and Arvada. She has worked as a teacher, librarian, income tax preparer,
and currently, a career counselor for welfare clients, employed
by Jefferson County. Harriet likes to garden with native plants
and reads everything. She has a daughter in Eugene who recently
finished her master's in folklore and two sisters who live in Manhattan.
Harriet is extremely excited about cohousing and is counting the
days.
Honey,
Paul, Katherine, and Jessica
Honey and Paul have been living and working in the central Denver
community for 25 years, except when they were in the foreign service
in Bangladesh. Paul has been in several productions at Germinal
Stage Denver and other community theater groups. He was the executive
director of the Uptown Partnership and a "Community Builder" with
HUD. He has an MS in engineering from DU. He has also been a general
contractor and carpenter and has built a few "Pro Rally" race cars.
Honey has volunteered for many non-profit organizations and is a
founding board member of Family Star and Montessori Early Childhood
Education in Northeast and Northwest Denver. She has worked with
veterinarians for 15 years, most recently as VP Acquisitions for
National Veterinary Associates. She has an MBA from DU and is a
CPA. Daughters Jessica and Katherine grew up in Mitchell Montessori
Elementary School. Jessica is now a sophomore at Smith College.
Katherine is a junior at East High School and plays the oboe with
Colorado Honor Band. They are avid skiers/boarders, campers and
lovers of Southern Utah.
Will
and Stephani
Will lived in informal cohousing throughout his childhood as his
mother continually rented rooms in their home to a variety of fascinating
individuals. He has been fortunate to have had the opportunity for
extensive travels and adventures, something he still enjoys as often
as possible. At 27 years old, Will practices massage and other wellness
therapies through his business, Holistic Bodyworks. He enjoys yoga,
biking, sailing, gardening and being in nature. He appreciates the
type of community that cohousing aspires to as well as the ecological
and economic benefits. Stephani is a native to Denver. She has been
a practicing massage and movement therapist for six years. She is
also a classically trained singer and is greatly interested in all
the arts. Stephani has a passion for cooking, especially using wonderful
organic foods. She loves travel, yoga, biking with Will on their
tandem bicycle, reading and enjoying family and friends. To Stephani,
cohousing seems like a great opportunity to learn, grow, stretch,
pool resources and possibly raise a child or two.
Howard
Howard grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. After completing his BS in
business administration at the University of Nebraska, he moved
to Colorado in 1977. He loves the outdoors and hiking with his two
dogs, Yukon and Lady. He has had a 25-year career with the federal
government with his favorites of working at Rocky Mountain National
Park and currently being a contracting officer with the US Fish
and Wildlife Service. Howard also has been a bartender, volunteer
firefighter, and B&B owner, and he feels he can contribute a lot
to community and cohousing.
Gretchen,
Jake and Zoe
Gretchen was born in Erie, PA. She taught lacemaking techniques
and sold lacemaking supplies for a number of years and still organizes
classes for groups of lacemakers at several European venues. Since
the fall of 1999, she has been running the computer lab at Brown
Elementary School in north Denver. Jake was born in St. Louis, MO.
He was a radio announcer in the Denver area for about 20 years (mostly
KOSI and KVOD), and now records books and magazine articles for
the Talking Books for the Blind program. Zoe was born in Changsha,
Hunan, China (Mao's hometown), in August 1992. She moved to Denver
in August 1995 and is now a second grader at Steele Elementary School
in Denver.
Lynn
Lynn is originally from California and moved to Colorado in 1969.
She completed her undergraduate degree and obtained her graduate
degree in Counseling in Colorado Springs. She then moved to Denver
because at the time, she felt she'd pretty much exhausted the mental
health job market in the Springs. After working in a variety of
settings with a wide range of different types of clients, she is
now in private practice as a psychotherapist and has been in the
mental health field for over 25 years. She is an animal lover, animal
rights advocate and sometimes, activist. She also loves the mountains,
the ocean, Nature and the outdoors in general. Prior to moving to
Colorado, she traveled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and
Asia, and has been in approximately 35 countries. She has been interested
in cohousing since learning about it in the mid-1990s.
Bruce
and Joanne
Bruce and Jo met at the University of Minnesota in the 50s, married,
had three sons and moved to Colorado in 1977. Bruce has been a Jr.
High science teacher, a counselor of college students, and an Episcopal
priest. Jo has been a public health nurse, volunteer in you-name-it,
and senior editor at a small Denver publishing company. They are
both retired and looking for ways to stretch and grow as individuals
while enjoying the benefits of relating to a variety of adults and
children. After hearing about Cohousing in the mid-90s, they were
excited to learn about Hearthstone's new venture in our very own
city.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth's work history began in the corn fields and canning factories
of northern Illinois. After those experiences, she saw the value
of higher education and became an educator. First, she taught high
school English and journalism. Then she got some higher degrees
in counseling and psychology in Colorado and Southern California.
After too many years at the University of Northern Colorado, she
left academia and began working with elders. She hopes to continue
similar work when she returns to Colorado. She enjoys stimulating
conversation, reading (especially mysteries), traveling (particularly
Latin America), live theatre, movies, ballet, looking at and being
in mountains, and politics. She wishes her Spanish were better and
believes toilet paper should go over the top of the roll. She enjoys
philosophical questions and lately has been wondering if George
W. is a "compassionate" conservative, what are the other conservatives?
Rick,
Lotte and Annabelle
This trio of soon-to-be-transplants from California fell in love
with the Hearthstone community on one of their cohousing treks in
early fall of 2000. They're especially looking forward to cooking
for the community and enjoy group garden projects, too. Lotte has
spent most of her life working for non-profits in one capacity or
another. Most recently, she spent 8 years working in a Tibetan Buddhist
center in the Bay Area. Rick has been a painter and master lithographer
for more than 15 years. The move to Denver will mean a switch from
lithography to full-time painting, which is both scary and exciting!
Rick also has great woodworking skills which should come in handy...And,
last but not least, Annabelle is their slightly-nervous-but-sweet
tabby-cat.
Tom
Tom grew up in northern Wisconsin and migrated to Boulder with his
family in 1957. There he graduated from Boulder High School and
the University of Colorado with a BS in Business (accounting major).
After that Tom accepted a job as an internal auditor and also completed
programmer training at IBM. When Uncle Sam called up the Air National
Guard, he spent a year in Viet Nam as an administrative specialist.
On return from overseas, he became a programmer and systems analyst
working primarily on payroll and benefits. After numerous years
in Information Systems, Tom helped create a Human Resource Information
Center. There he worked with employee data and system security,
as well as writing ad hoc computer reports. Then after surviving
a downsizing, a merger, and too many long, stressful days at work,
he decided to take early retirement. Now Tom is enjoying his freedom,
but spends some of his time volunteering for the Red Cross and Rocky
Mountain Road Runners, as well as tutoring math at McClain Community
High School. He also enjoys activities such as swimming, biking,
skiing, working out, line dancing and participating in a wide variety
of events with a singles club. Traveling is a big interest for him
as he's been in all 50 states and about 20 foreign countries. For
many years Tom participated in sports car rallying as a navigator
and has completed seven Great Races, antique car rallies from coast
to coast. He's also interested in genealogy and hopes to spend more
time discovering the origin of his family name. Tom was introduced
to cohousing by friends that live at Harmony Village in Golden and
looks forward to interacting with all the interesting people in
the Hearthstone community.
John,
Kellie and David
John Connell and Kellie Teter were both born in Denver. This makes
their son, David Teter (born 10/27/97) a rare 100% Denverite. Kellie
is a Health Educator with Women's Health Section of the Colorado
Department of Public Health and Environment. She has a bachelors
degree in Sociology and also holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration
from CU Denver, neither of which she uses in her job. John manages
contracts related to mobile sources of air pollution for the USEPA
and has bachelors degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University,
which he does not use in his job either. David has successfully
managed to avoid obtaining any degrees during his first three years
of life. His jobs include doing construction with his toy front-end
loader and with his Lincoln logs; fixing people with his doctor
tools and learning constantly about everything.
Kellie
and John met after John returned from serving in the Peace Corps
in Tunisia in 1990. They are involved in a number of volunteer activities,
including Denver Kids (a one-on-one mentoring program through Denver
Public Schools), facilitating a sexuality education class for junior
high kids at their church, and the local toy library. Other interests
include: sustainable development, cooking, movies, politics, education,
participating in the training in individual and organizational effectiveness
and communication offered by Landmark Education Inc., hiking, skiing,
running and just about anything concerning kids. Kellie and John
are both thrilled to be part of Hearthstone and David has been telling
absolutely everyone, "WE are moving to cohousing!!"
Zoe
and Dennis
Zoe and Dennis met in Kansas City, MO, the halfway point between
two worlds known as Ladysmith, BC in Canada and the Bronx, New York.
Zoe was getting her BFA in Dance and Dennis his MFA in Acting and
Directing in the Theatre Arts Program at UMKC. Within a year and
a half they made their eternal commitment and after completing their
university studies, Zoe and Dennis were on their way to Boulder,
CO where Zoe was determined to become a certified Rolfer and supplement
her dancing with a Rolfing and massage practice as well as volunteer
as an infant massage instructor. Dennis decided to take a much-needed
break from the rigors of the theatre, and after seven years of intense
studies, jumped into the business workforce and moved up to his
current management position for a Physician referral service. Zoe
is very proud of her childhood community in Canada and is extremely
excited at the prospect of recreating those aspects in the cohousing
environment. Both Dennis and Zoe are looking forward to starting
a family in the next few years and see the decision to join Hearthstone
as the much-needed step to make this prospect a reality.
Currently,
Dennis is volunteering as a bilingual ESL literacy tutor for the
Boulder Reads Program and is ready to come out of theatrical retirement.
He has just received a Colorado Statement of Eligibility for a drama
teacher's license and in the next two years, look for this neighbor
teaching at a high school, directing, or who knows -- maybe even
acting at a theatre near you. Zoe has been very busy with her Rolfing
practice in Denver and Boulder as well as her many dance projects.
She is currently dancing with the Hannah Khan Dance Company and
Jumpstart Productions in Denver as well as the Open Door Dance Theatre
in Boulder. She hopes to continue these activities in full force.
Most importantly, Zoe and Dennis feel fortunate to be literally
neighbors with two very good friends, Ali and Alex. "We look
forward to extending our friendship with Ali and Alex to the whole
cohousing community."
Alex,
Alison and Muddy
Alex and Alison feel that they have stumbled upon one of the best-kept
secrets in Colorado! They feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity
to grow as a couple, hopefully a family, and as people in such a
wonderful village as Hearthstone. With them, they will bring their
adorable little cocker spaniel named Muddy, Alex's newly found passion
for the violin and Alison's creativity, crafty style and explosive
ability in the kitchen (ask Dennis). Alex is a native of Las Vegas
and Brazil and is fluent in Portuguese, is learning Spanish, and
loves new adventures. Alison has lived in Florida, Alabama, Virginia,
Arizona and Germany. She is a beginner acoustic guitar player, loves
children, crafts and baking things like biscotti, cookies, and cakes
and generally having fun and laughing lots. They both currently
work in Boulder. Alex is a multimedia content designer and Alison
is a branch manager for a local staffing agency. The couple met
while attending the Occupational Therapy program at Colorado State
University and while they have yet to use the degree, they both
feel blessed to have met each other. As a couple they enjoy traveling
(most recently to Brazil for two weeks), hiking, biking, running,
picnicking and camping as well as dinners with friends, playing
games, watching movies and reading anything from Harry Potter to
Buddhist teachings.
Muddy
is a year and a half old and has one desire and passion in life...
his tennis ball.
Susan
Susan is a social worker and is employed as a program administrator
for State Child Welfare, a division of the Colorado Department of
Human Services. From Springfield, Illinois, Susan came to Denver
two decades ago. Hobbies include letting her dog in and out her
back door, eating-out and watching movies. She likes the water and
loves to camp, sail and canoe on Colorado's lakes and rivers. She
roller blades, bicycles and hikes in the summertime and is a cross-country
skier in the winter. She considers herself a backpacker, but just
hasn't done it lately. She studies eastern spirituality and meditates
and is a "sometimes" student of yoga. It was on her recent trip
to India that Susan realized that she wanted to live a more "linked-in"
existence, so she looked up the Hearthstone cohousing group upon
her return home and shortly after, became a member.
